چکیده

1 The environment has a temporal structure, and knowing when a stimulus will appear 2 translates into increased perceptual performance. Here we investigated how the human 3 brain exploits temporal regularity in stimulus sequences for perception. We find that the 4 timing of stimuli that occasionally deviate from a regularly paced sequence is 5 perceptually distorted. Stimuli presented earlier than expected are perceptually delayed, 6 whereas stimuli presented on time and later than expected are perceptually accelerated. 7 This result suggests that the brain regularizes slightly deviant stimuli with an 8 asymmetry that leads to the perceptual acceleration of expected stimuli. We present a 9 Bayesian model for the combination of dynamically-updated expectations, in the form 10 of a priori probability of encountering future stimuli, with incoming sensory 11 information. The asymmetries in the results are accounted for by the asymmetries in the 12 distributions involved in the computational process. 13

Observers Exploit Stochastic Models of Sensory Change to Help Judge the Passage of Time

Sensory stimulation can systematically bias the perceived passage of time, but why and how this happens is mysterious. In this report, we provide evidence that such biases may ultimately derive from an innate and adaptive use of stochastically evolving dynamic stimuli to help refine estimates derived from internal timekeeping mechanisms. A simplified statistical model based on probabilistic exp...

Linking melodic expectation to expressive performance timing and perceived musical tension.

This research explored the relations between the predictability of musical structure, expressive timing in performance, and listeners' perceived musical tension. Studies analyzing the influence of expressive timing on listeners' affective responses have been constrained by the fact that, in most pieces, the notated durations limit performers' interpretive freedom. To circumvent this issue, we f...

On the Optimal Frequency and Timing of Control Points in a Project’s Life Cycle

The dynamic nature of projects and the fact that they are carried out in changing environments, justify the need for their periodic monitoring and control. Collection of information about the performance of projects at control points costs money. The corrective actions that may need to be taken to bring the project in line with the plan also costs money. On the other hand, penalties are usually...

Association between perceived self-efficacy, outcome expectations and outcome evaluation and fruit and vegetables consumption in adolescent girls

Unfortunately just a few number of children and adolescents use sufficient amounts of fruit and vegetables. This study aimed to investigate the association between fruit and vegetables consumption and perceived self-efficacy, outcome expectations and outcome evaluation in adolescent girls in Shahrekord city. This is a descriptive analytic study conducted on 308 high school girls (first grade) wh...
